FAQ

General Questions

What is PermaNet® Screen?

PermaNet® Screen is the first and only long-lasting insecticidal screen for outdoor mosquito control that kills mosquitoes by contact. This advanced new solution provides long-lasting insecticidal efficacy for at least two years, without the need to retreat.

How does PermaNet® Screen work?

PermaNet® Screen is made from polyethylene that is embedded with the World Health Organization approved insecticide, deltamethrin. The sustained insecticide release ensures insecticidal activity for at least 2 years. PermaNet® Screen kills mosquitoes (that can transmit Zika, Dengue, Chikungunya and West Nile). Mosquitoes die by contact with the screen.

Can PermaNet® Screen be used outside of the house to protect against mosquitoes?

Yes, PermaNet® Screen can be used to kill mosquitoes and reduce the mosquito population when applied to outdoor areas including schools, health facilities, open-air dining and shopping venues, and outdoor recreation facilities.

How long will PermaNet® Screen last?

PermaNet® Screen is designed for outdoor use. The insecticide is UV protected and kills mosquitoes for at least 24 months, even with repeated exposure to sunlight.

Does PermaNet® Screen kill all species of mosquitoes?

PermaNet® Screen has been fully tested and effectively kills Anopheles, Aedes and Culex mosquitoes by contact (EPA Reg No.: 85787-1; EPA Est No.: 92645-VNM-1).

How long does it take for mosquitoes to die once they contact PermaNet® Screen?

The length of time it takes for a mosquito to die after coming into contact with PermaNet® Screen varies, but can be as fast as a few seconds. The longer a mosquito spends on the PermaNet® Screen, the more insecticide they are exposed to and the more quickly they will die. Deltamethrin is a fast-acting insecticide that ‘knocks down’ mosquitoes within 60 minutes of exposure, and usually kills within 24 hours.

What other insects does PermaNet® Screen kill?

PermaNet® Screen also kills stable flies and midges (no-see-ums).

Who is the manufacturer?

PermaNet® Screen is manufactured by Vestergaard, a global health company committed to developing innovative technologies that play a significant role in fighting malaria and other vector-borne diseases, diarrheal diseases and neglected tropical diseases. In fact, more than 1.5 billion people have benefitted from our PemaNet® long-lasting insecticidal bed nets since 2003.

Safety And Efficacy

Is PermaNet® Screen safe for use around children and pets?

The insecticide used in PermaNet® Screen is the same that is used in mosquito nets approved by the World Health Organization to protect people, including newborn babies from malaria. Only a small fraction of the insecticide is on the surface of the screen; the rest is locked away inside as a "reservoir" inside the fibers.

What studies have been done to confirm efficacy of PermaNet® Screen?

PermaNet® Screen has been tested in both laboratory and field settings. It kills mosquitoes by contact, including Aedes (mosquitoes that can transmit Zika, Dengue, Chikungunya, Yellow Fever), Culex (mosquitoes that transmit the West Nile virus) and Anopheles (mosquitoes that transmit malaria), as well as biting midges (Culicoides). No decline in efficacy was observed with PermaNet® Screen that had aged outdoors for 27 months, with 100 percent mortality recorded with Aedes aeqypti and Anopheles gambiae after only three minutes of exposure.

What studies have been done to demonstrate the safety of PermaNet® Screen?

Safety and toxicity studies following OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) guidelines have been completed (EPA Reg No.: 85787-1; EPA Est No.: 92645-VNM-1). The insecticide used in PermaNet® Screen has a low mammalian toxicity and is approved by the World Health Organization for use in bed nets, which are used to protect newborns and young children from mosquitoes.

My hands got itchy when installing PermaNet® Screen. What does that mean?

Wear waterproof, rubber or non-permeable protective gloves when handling the PermaNet® Screen. The insecticide in PermaNet® Screen can give some irritation to certain people. If you feel any irritation after handling the screen without gloves, wash your hands with plenty of soapy water.

Installation

How do I install PermaNet® Screen?

PermaNet® Screen is easy to install yourself, just like the installation of a privacy barrier. Plastic ties or fasteners are required. Ensure the fastener is long enough to fit around your fence post. Feed the plastic ties or fence fasteners through the grommet spacing to securely attach PermaNet® Screen to fences or railings of decks and porches. Particular attention should be paid to installing PermaNet® Screen in shaded areas behind vegetation, around the crawl space of a building where mosquitoes rest, near mosquito breeding spots (drains, bird baths, standing water, used tires) and near areas where people congregate (seating areas, porches, decks). For installation around a backyard fence, simply use a staple gun to staple the screen to the fence.

What equipment is needed to install it?

To install PermaNet® Screen in outdoor areas, such as around fences and decks, you’ll need gloves and a staple gun with staples.

Maintenance

How often is it necessary to replace PermaNet® Screen?

PermaNet® Screen provides insecticidal protection from biting mosquitoes, even with repeated exposure to sunlight, for at least 24 months.

Will it still work after 24 months?

PermaNet® Screen effectively kills mosquitoes for at least 24 months. After this time, there may be some reduction in efficacy (it may take longer to kill mosquitoes or it won’t kill 100% of mosquitoes that contact the PermaNet® Screen) but the efficacy does not disappear completely. It reduces gradually as the insecticide inside the fibers become depleted.

How do I clean PermaNet® Screen?

Simply wipe down PermaNet® Screen with a damp cloth with warm water and a mild non-alkaline detergent, if needed.

How should I dispose of PermaNet® Screen?

Any unused PermaNet® Screen should be stored in its original packaging in a cool, dry place, away from children and pets. When it’s time to install a new PermaNet® Screen, the used screen should be disposed of in the trash. Do not reuse the packaging.
